The article presents the history and morphological interpretation of the gratitude monument in Lidzbark
Warmiński. The monument was built in 1949 in honour of the Soviet soldiers that were killed during the World
War II. The project was made by WiktorTucewicz, and the new monument was located in a place where, until
1945, there stood a First World War monument. Initially the new monument took the form of a pyramid, and in
1972 sculptors Jan WiesławKaczmarek and Hubert Maciejczyk added to it a group of soldiers. In 2016, the Town
Hall of LidzbarkWarmiński decided to dismantle the monument.
The form of the monument consists of symbolic (pyramid) and narrative (soldiers) parts. The enlargement of the monument, its cubic form, the addition ofa new form (wings) – was all typical for Polish sculptural
development after 1945
