ABSTRACT
The article presents the life story of the esteemed Warmian painter Jakub Kolberg (1631-1704), born in Melzak (Pieniężno), who worked professionally in several Warmian towns and died in Dobre Miasto. He was a deaf-mute man, but outstandingly talented artistically, resourceful and entrepreneurial. Thanks to numerous archival sources and the great kindness of the Directorate of the Sächsisches Staatsarchiv, the Staatsarchiv Leipzig and Dr. Arkadiusz Danszczyk of the Martin-Opitz-Bibliothek in Herne, the author has arranged the information hitherto published in the literature, correcting some of it and presenting new, previously unknown data on important moments in the life of Jakub Kolberg. The painter's death in Dobre Miasto, his activity in the old town of Braniewo and his second marriage in Melzak are illustrated with relevant excerpts from the metrical and municipal registers: Dobre Miasto register of the deceased, Braniewo municipal register, and Melzak marriage register.
