ABSTRACT
The archive of the Archdiocese of Warmia in Olsztyn preserves the will of Bishop Krzysztof Szembek of Warmia, together with lists of his movables and a disposition to execute his will. From documents drawn up in 1738 and in January 1740, we learn about the bishop’s movable
property: his clothes, everyday belongings, the money in the treasury, silver, upholstery and carriages. The inventories included portraits of the entire Szembek family tree and the bishop’s book collection, which, according to his will, was to be donated to the Jesuit college in Reszel.
No less interesting is the list drawn up at the bishop’s command and describing what items and how much money is to be passed on to the given person. This list is worth a separate article. These valuable documents reflect the bishop’s tastes, fashion and culture of daily and festive life.
