ABSTRACT
This article discusses from a press-historical and historico-literary perspective the translations into Russian of Ignacy Krasicki’s essays On Writing and Letters (from the series Notes), published in the Kharkiv journal „Ukrainskiy Vestnik” in 1819. The interest in them on the part of the translator, who was a lecturer at the Department of the Polish Language at Kharkiv University, Peter Hulak-Artemovsky, was determined by the literary themes raised in them (stages and principles of the creation of a work, the history and role of epistolography). The titles of the essays were considered to be the main challenge for the translator (the translator changed them to Coś niecoś dla pisarzy [This and That for Writers] and O listach [On Letters]), as well as the Latin quotations from Horace’s Letter to the Pisons and Macrobius’ Saturnalia with the accompanying commentary by Krasicki and the accumulation of names of epistolographers from antiquity to the Enlightenment.
