More than eighty years after the end of World War II, its effects remain visible in the urban landscape of Polish cities. In many cases, however, planning decisions made after 1945 had an equally significant impact on their contemporary appearance; the rationale for these decisions lies in growing housing needs and in the perception of the historic residential buildings as a problem. This article presents a case study of the transformations of Nowy Dwór Gdański after 1945. Particular attention is devoted to the fate of pre-war residential buildings within the broader context of the so-called Recovered Territories. This analysis covers the city within its current administrative boundaries. The research was based on plans and maps, archival documentation, photographs, and on-site inspections. This allowed for a chronological urban stratification, the identification of areas undergoing the greatest transformations, and the determination of the key factors influencing the changes.
