ABSTRACT
The aim of this article is to present issues related to the relationship between the Bishop of Warmia, Augustinus Bludau (1862–1930, bishop from 1909 to 1930), and the Polish catholic community of the Warmia diocese. Drawing on sources, largely from press materials and analyzing the findings of existing historiography as well as drawing author's own conclusions, the article discusses the bishop's efforts to meet the religious needs of Polish-speaking Catholics in Warmia. The article presents the bishop's stance in the context of the difficult situation and oppression faced by the Polish-speaking community in East Prussia in the first half of the 20th century. Particular attention is paid to the steps taken by the bishop to support Polish Catholics and provide them with pastoral care in their native language. The focus is on the southern part of historic Warmia, although it also explores other areas of the Warmia diocese within its 1909–1930 boundaries.
